She stopped midway along and raised her head, ears twitching as she tried to listen past the sound of the waves and the wind. Her nose twitched as she sniffed, filtering out the salty tang and trying to pick up any underlying scents… And there it was, subtle, masked by the scent of some of the coniferous trees that lined the coast further up from the beach.
Not that she needed the scent. The sounds coming from the foliage were more than enough to tell her all that she needed to know, and she smiled a little feline smile to herself.
“I can hear you following me, Sky,” she said aloud.
There was a distinct feminine curse before a petite white femme with red and black trim stepped out from behind a tree and made her way across the sand towards the tawny mountain lioness, shoulders slumped and grumbling.
“And here I thought I was doing a good job.”
“Yes, but I’m a tracker. It’s my job to sense what doesn’t belong.” Kefira paused, considering something. “Though… you would have made it a little more difficult for me had you stayed downwind of me.”
“Fraggit!” She pouted. “Now you’re just rubbing it in, Kef.”
The feline chuckled. “Just a little bit, and with good reason. What are you doing here following me?”
Sky ducked her head a bit. “I wanted to make sure you were okay.”
“I told you I was fine before I left.” Kefira started to walk again, resuming her patrol of the beach. “You cant keep following me around everywhere I go Sky, it could be dangerous for you, and me.”
The white femme walked after her. “You had a chunk blown off your flank, excuse me for worrying about you. Just because you’re my part-time lover doesn’t mean you’ve stopped being my best friend and little sister. It’s too soon for you to be on duty again.”
“Hound... your dad, said it was okay, and this is one of the easiest patrol routes anyone can have.”
“Keffy please… let me take you home.”
“Let me finish my patrol.” The feline looked back. “Shouldn’t you be taking care of your patients? You’re a medic.”
“Yes, and I am taking care of a patient.” Sky crouched on a knee. “Please Kef.”
Kefira sighed. “I just have a few meters left… till I reach the other end of the bay. I’ll stop when I reach it, I promise. I need to do my job, too, Sky.”
“Then at least let me walk with you.”
“Alright.” Kef relented. “C’mon… the sooner I finish, the sooner we can rest.”
They walked in comfortable silence for a while, the moonlight shimmering on the calm sea and glinting off their armor. Sky let her hand rest on Kef’s head, gently stroking her head and ears, knowing the young lioness liked the feeling. Kef in turn pressed up against Sky’s leg, purring softly and letting the light vibration calm the older femme.
Sky looked down and smiled, scratching lightly under the feline’s chin, and stroking the front of her neck, shivering when Kef licked her wrist and palm, sensitive medic’s hand feeling every last tingle it sent up her arm. She brought her hand back over Kef’s head, running it over her spine, feeling the lithe frame.
Kefira smiled up at her. “I’m glad you care Sky. I may not say it often, but I am.”
“I know you are Keffy, and it means a lot to me to know you approve of what I do.” She tickled the back of the cat’s neck. “And you know I worry only because I love you.”
Kef shook her head to ease the tickle. “I know Sky. I love you, too.”
~*~*~*~*~
Sky watched her friend for a while, checking on how she moved to see if the flank was giving Kef any problems. She noticed a slight limp now and then and frowned, but didn’t say anything. She knew Kefira wanted to prove to herself more than anyone else that she was getting better and stronger again, and perhaps this light walk was good exercise for the leg after being inactive for so long.
She stroked Kef’s head again. “I was so scared for you…. When that shell exploded and you were right there… I thought they were going to bring you in with worse than a chunk blown off your flank.”
“I jumped clear of most of it.” Kef nuzzled her hand. “But I’m sorry for scaring you. It looked worse than it was, didn’t it?”
“Thankfully. Didn’t stop me from being afraid though. I hate seeing you hurt.”
“I really am careful when scouting, Sky, and in battles.”
Sky nodded. “Just that there are always freak accidents.”
“Yeah. Hard to see those coming.”
Sky didn’t give voice to the fear that she might one day lose Kef to one of those freak accidents. That was not something the young femme needed to hear, especially not now, maybe not ever. She was too young, they were both too young; eventhough neither of them was directly involved in the war, it still touched them.
She remembered the time one of Kef’s fathers had been critically injured, and the other had fallen into stasis because of their bond. She had been terrified that the young lioness might end up becoming an orphan, and was her only comfort during that dark time. Thank Primus her own father had been able to repair the first and save the second, but she never wanted to see Kef go through something like that again.
A nudge to her leg brought her out of her dark thoughts and she looked down to see that Kef had stopped walking, and looked to be in a slight bit of discomfort. She chided herself for not paying proper attention to her friend.
“Patrol’s done,” Kef said softly.
“Oh Keffy, you’re exhausted!” Sky crouched and gathered the feline into her arms, surprisingly to little protest. “You should have spoken up.”
She carried Kefira to the shelter of some rocks and sat, leaning back against a large rock with Kef in her lap. Worriedly, she ran her hands over the other femme’s body, checking her for injuries, particularly the newly-healed flank. It felt warm, slightly warmer than the rest of Kef’s body, probably with the extra exertion.
Kef gave a slight wince and her leg twitched. “Had to finish patrol.”
“Hang the patrol!” Sky exclaimed, a little upset. “You could have been hurt again! And… and… I would’ve been alone….”
“So that’s it…” The young lioness sat up on her haunches and leaned in to nuzzle against the other femme’s neck and cheek, purring to soothe her. “I wont leave you alone, Sky.”
Sky hugged her close and pressed her face to Kef’s shoulder, fighting down a shiver. “Was so scared.”
Kef lifted a forepaw and placed it on Sky’s shoulder, licking her cheek. “It’s okay… it’s okay now, sis… don’t be afraid anymore.” She leaned against her older friend, still purring assuringly and continuing to lick her face and neck.
Finally, Sky seemed to calm down and pulled back from the feline’s shoulder, returning the nuzzles and stroking gently down Kef’s side and flank with her hand. She held the younger femme’s face in her other hand, leaned and softly kissed her muzzle while Kef licked Sky’s lips in return.
“Stay with me…” Sky murmured….
~*~*~*~*~
Moonlight glistened along the two small metallic bodies – one humanoid, one feline as they lay together, the smaller lioness across the slightly larger femme, wrapped in her arms. Energy buzzed softly around their frames, dispersing away slowly on the cool sea breeze drifting in with the tide.
Kefira stroked her tail lightly along Sky’s side, hip and thigh, purring gently as Sky kissed her muzzle, then her cheek and on her head. She licked Sky’s lips and cheeks, and rubbed her head gently against the older femme’s neck, purring more when Sky scritched her ears and under her chin.
“You know I’ll always be there for you,” she said quietly. “And I know you will be, for me.”
Sky looked down at the young lioness. “And you have always been there. That’s why I get scared sometimes, because I wonder if there might come a day where you might not be.”
Kef shook her head. “You shouldn’t think that way. If you do, you’ll be too scared to do anything. You cant let the fear win.”
Sky smiled a bit and rubbed the cat’s healing flank gently, easing the soreness she felt. “You’ve always been the brave lioness, and me, the scared little medic wondering if it was safe to come out and play… and you were always there, taking my wrist in your mouth and pulling me out.”
“And I’d say, ‘come play with me; you’ll never get to have fun if you keep being scared of falling down’… and you came out, and you fell, and you’d get up again. It makes you braver than me in a sense that you did it eventhough you were scared.” Kef placed a paw in her hand.
“You helped me be brave.” Sky squeezed the paw lightly. “And it was easy to be brave with you around.”
“And I’m still around, so you can still be brave.”
“Yeah, I guess I can be.” She hugged the feline close. “Thank you, Keffy.”
Kefira nuzzled her. “You’re welcome. Let’s go home? It’s nice out here, but the tide’s coming in and I don’t fancy salt water in my gears.”
“Fussy cat.” Sky smiled as she got to her feet and picked up her friend, heading off the beach and making for the road where she could transform to her vehicle mode and drive them home.
“I know, but you’ll still give me a ride home.”
“Always.”
